Baking season has ended at the abbey where I work. The time has arrived to begin packing and shipping our commercial orders. Funny thing though, I’ve already packaged and shipped several commercial orders while we were still baking. Hmm…I guess the past few weeks I’ve been in transition (from baking to packaging) and just didn’t realize it.
Interesting how transition works. It’s like you’re not aware you’re in transition until you’re through it. It’s like looking in the rear view mirror and realizing where you’ve been after you’ve been there.
transition -> “the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another”
Just what is it about transition that makes it so difficult?
One word – “change”
Ask around. I bet you won’t be able to find a single person that truly loves change. Accept change, yes, but love change..well, that’s an entirely different can of worms! Change is challenging because it forces us out of our comfort zone. It makes us learn something new. Sometimes we may even have to give up a level of control…oh control…and who wants to give that away?
Another word – “process”
Isn’t process just a fancy way of saying “activity”? Wait! Taking action sounds like it’s going to involve work. Work is hard, right? I don’t like work, thus transition is hard…hard work. Yup, transition’s not for me. I’m out.
A final word – “period”
Time. Our enemy. I haven’t got enough time, so how much time will this take? What do you mean you don’t know? “As long as it takes” is not an answer I can accept. I need to know so I can plan and have control over it. I need to know when it’s going to end so I can “be done with it “.
Transition.
It’s what takes us from where we are to where we want to be.
Transition.
